Campfire Stew: Fort Worth’s Girl Scout Troop 11

“Scouting with Troop 11 gave me the curiosity to explore, the courage to try, the confidence to achieve, and, most of all, sisters to love for a lifetime.”–Elaine Walton Lofland

Girl Scout Troop 11 is by no means ordinary.

Campfire Stew: Fort Worth’s Girl Scout Troop 11 is the inspiring and humorous story of a very special Texas Girl Scout troop whose members have stayed together for seventy years. The troop began in 1949 as eighteen feisty, chatty, and lively five-and-six-year-old girls. They grew into outstanding women who are still impacting the world in which they live.

Campfire Stew is both a favorite dish of the troop and a metaphor for the troop itself–each girl/woman is one stew ingredient, good by herself, but so much better when mixed with the others.

About the Author

Linda Kay Killian Wood, a charter member of Brownie Troop 11, has remained involved with Girl Scout Troop/Ship 11 throughout its long life.

Linda has been a feature writer for the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram, assistant editor for the Austin-based Texas Medicine, and a technical writer-editor at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Los Alamos, New Mexico. She is the author of hundreds of articles that have been published in national, regional, and local magazines and newspapers. Although she has been editor, co-editor, and contributing writer on several award-winning books while employed at LANL, Campfire Stew is her first non-corporate-sponsored book.

She was selected to Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Kappa Tau Alpha honor societies and to Theta Sigma Phi professional journalism fraternity.

Linda has been married to Gerry Wood since 1965. The couple has two children and three grandchildren, all of whom reside in Texas. The Woods are active members of Los Alamos Church of Christ. They have traveled to twenty-eight countries outside the United States and have visited all fifty states. When not writing or traveling, Linda likes to read and do counted cross-stitch.
